Your BMI (Body Mass Index) scale is closely related to your health.
When you want to create a balance in your body, to feel great at any moment, then you’d look at different aspects, how to put them in harmony with your whole body.
Not only your current health is related to your Body Mass Index, but also your willingness to maintain it. Your weight is connected to your health and BMI. In this article, we look at some aspects of your BMI, health, and the motivation to maintain healthy and balanced body weight.
First, you’d learn extensively about BMI.
What is the BMI scale?
The BMI scale is a table with values that show where are you in terms of obesity. It shows if you are overweight, underweight, or at your healthy, normal weight.
Ancel Keys, American physiologist was the promoter of what Adolphe Quetelet, Belgium scientist of the mid-19th century discovered as a formula to express the proportions between the entire weight of the human body and the body fat knowing that humans grow far more in height than in width.
Consequently, categories of weight have been established for an adult person, less the exceptions, as you see below.
The Body Mass Index is a number to estimate your body fat. The BMI scale ranges as follows:
less than 18.5, the person is underweight
between 18.5 to 24.9, the person is normal weight
between 25 to 29.9, the person is overweight
30 and higher, the person is obese
Exceptions from the ranges above are persons in these categories:
- pregnant and lactating women
- muscular athletes, bodybuilders
- people younger than 18
- people over 65
According to the ranges above, after the Body Mass Index calculation, you may see that its value is closer to an end of a range.
What does this tell about your body imbalance? Or if you feel great and the BMI number is in “that” specific range, then do you have a balanced body? It depends, you may be feeling great, and as a rule of thumb, the BMI could also be in the “right” range. Or you may be feeling great and you could still be “overweight” just at the bottom range of “overweight” values.
Let’s consider an example to calculate BMI for an average person and it would clarify the values of the BMI scale and in what range they are going to be.
How to calculate BMI
BMI is your weight (in kilograms) divided by your height squared (in meters).
For example, to calculate this index for an adult person weighing 136 lbs and a height of 6ft 2in we follow these steps:
1. Convert pounds to kilograms – conversion factor 0.45:
136 X 0.45 = 61.2 kg
2. Convert inches to meters – conversion factor .025:
74 X 0.025 = 1.85 m
3. Square the answer from step 2
1.85 X 1.85 = 3.4225
4.Divide the answer from step 1 by the answer from step 3
61.2 / 3.4225 = 17.88
it gives 17.88 and the person is underweight or below what is considered the normal weight from the above ranges.
All calculations reflect how to estimate the numbers of BMI for a specific height and weight.
The calculated index – in this case, 17.88 – is not considered set in stone when it comes to the evaluation of one’s health.
There may be persons whose BMI falls in the underweight or overweight category or even obese and these persons might not be considered obese.
There might be some health risk factors involved.
Health risk factors
We check the BMI scale value because overweight or obese person could be at high risk of getting:
High blood pressure (hypertension)
High blood sugar
High LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol)
Low HDL cholesterol (“good” cholesterol)
diseases caused by cigarette smoking
diseases from the family history of premature heart disease
disease caused by physical inactivity
If people have one of the above, it’s considered that their health is affected and they cannot perform at their best.
The medical staff not only considers the BMI and waist measurement of the person but they also examine the overall health and the likelihood of being at risk with heart disease and diabetes.
Under the medical evaluation, the doctor may consider other factors & measurements which could influence their health: waistline measurement, evaluation of diet, skinfold thickness.
Skinfold thickness factor
The skinfold thickness is usually determined by the body fat mass, and as you see the index calculated from the BMI scale goes into a “weight” category.
Then you know where your bodyweight stays, whether you would need to increase or decrease your body weight. This measurement is approximate and it does not show exactly at which BMI is a person that body contains a lot of fat compared to other tissues, for instance, the muscle.
In current medicine, to make the BMI scale index closer to its true value, doctors have started to measure body fat.
So far a few ways to measure body fat or visceral adipose tissue (VAT) have been used.
Ways to measure the VAT of the human body
1) – online tool Calliper which sometimes does not prove accurate.
2) ADP or displacement plethysmography which calculates the volume of air displaced by the person’s total body volume.
The person is introduced into a sealed chamber. The body fat is calculated depending on the body’s density.
The density of the body can be calculated from the total weight and body volume replaced by this person’s body in the chamber.
It does not affirm as a precise way of measurement from the experiments.
3) A method based on an infra-red beam – a near-infrared interactance – which is sent to a person’s biceps.
The infrared light is reflected by the respective muscle and is absorbed by the fat. Even with sophisticated measurements, the results are not accurate since not all fat in the body may have the same dispersion and density as in the biceps.
4) more recently a novel way of finding the proportion of body fat is calculated through the DXA or dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.
This method accounts for the measurement of fat in several points on the person’s body and results in a number reflecting the general fat composition.
The results of the cutting-edge DXA technique
The characteristics of the DXA cutting-edge technique to calculate the fat/soft tissue composition:
- can focus on a specified region of the body, as well as the whole
- at different values of energy, it calculates the differential reduction of the intensity of an X-ray beam as it crosses the tissue
- the radiation dose is relatively low and the duration of the scan relatively shorter than an MRI or a CT scan
DXA has been compared to the MRI method and it proves superior, although so far tested only on average mean population demonstrates more accurate than with any other methods.
This technique has been verified through this study in the Dallas Heart Study (DHS) on a good mix of gender, race, and age engaging pair of the DXA and MRI measurements. However, the participants have type-2 diabetes.
The conclusions show that this could be a step forward in estimating the true VAT value for a specific person. The adipose tissue measurement helps define a more accurate index on the BMI scale.
With a better balance and the knowledge about your visceral adipose tissue can make you decide in regards to what aspects are important for your wellness.
Motivational decisions for a balanced body
One of the crucial decisions consists of taking certain steps to keep you from diseases.
The next paragraph gives you the tools to create your own idea of what it means to attain your optimum wellness and maintain it.
Your optimum health depends on your optimum bodyweight which index you have just calculated.
You can find it on your own and harmonize the solutions with your own ideas. Get the knowledge now and here or later from other sources.
Remember that you are in control, you are the one to make the right decisions. At every moment you keep the harmonious level of functioning at your best. No one else can decide for you.
It’s pivotal to consult and achieve a harmonious goal with all knowledgeable sources, including receiving advice from the medical specialists.
Taking action to maintain your health also based on your BMI scale could result in blocking any kind of disease to take over your body.
Blocking diseases and your state of health
Preventing the disease is an art that you can master to keep your body in the permanent state of health.
